100 students visit Mexico’s new planetarium and museum

More than one hundred of Belize’s brightest primary school students, selected by the Mexican Embassy, travelled to Chetumal on Thursday to visit the new “Yook’ol Kaab” Planetarium and the Museum of the Mayan Culture. The students, ages ten to thirteen years old, were treated to a fun lesson on astronomy and Mayan culture. At the planetarium, they viewed two films; the history of space travels and the origin of the universe as well as “The Mystery of the Christmas Star”. The students also had the opportunity to use the telescope in the observatory. Meanwhile, at the Museum of the Mayan Culture, they visited the collections on the history, architecture, social organization, religion, astronomy and technology of ancient Mayan peoples. The day trip was provided free of cost through the Department of Culture and the Quintana Roo Council for Science and Technology.
